Our ESG Commitments

Our ESG Commitments

ESG refers to three interrelated factors expressed as standards for an organisation’s operational and corporate behaviour. Underpinned by the concept of sustainability, ESG is about achieving strong environmental, social and governance outcomes over a long term, common future. Austral formalised its ESG journey in 2022, with the development of an ESG Strategy and Program. Since then, Austral have continued to mature their ESG position through regular stakeholder engagement and the delivery of a number of ESG initiatives.

Austral’s mission is to profitably mine and process ores to make copper metal, to provide a return to its investors, to be a valued contributor to the Mt Isa district and its stakeholders, and to meet and exceed its environmental obligations over the life of its assets. Most importantly, the Company’s governance is such that it complies with the mining regulations that create a framework for environmental practices and interface effectively with indigenous communities.

Copper's unique properties as an excellent conductor of electricity and heat make it an important component for building a sustainable future.  From wind turbines and solar panels to electric vehicle batteries and charging stations, copper is essential for the clean energy technologies needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  Furthermore, its durability and recyclability make it a sustainable material choice, contributing to a circular economy where resources are used efficiently and waste is minimised.

As the world transitions towards a low-carbon future, copper will be a crucial l mineral underpinning a sustainable economy, one of which Austral is proud to be a part of.
